GP30
This loco needed a replacement of a decoder located in the fuel tank. Over the years the sharp edges of the brass fuel tank had cut the protective covering over the decoder allowing it to short against the frame.
After removing the decoder from the opening in the fuel tank and cutting the wires, it was an easy installation of a decoder. Only four wires were from the decoder and the wires were long enough to make all the connections. Red to the engineer’s rail pickup. Black to the fireman’s pickup. Orange to the positive motor connection and gray to the negative connection.
A small bit of surgery required cutting off the tabs inside the brass body which balanced on the edges of the new decoder.
Both a GP30 A unit and a GP30 B unit of the same manufacture had decoders installed this way.
